Gala Placidia is described as "the black servant who came back from her old slave quarters as soon as she was told of [the Daza's] return" (chapter 2, p97). She helps Fermina with household chores, including helping her shop in the market. She provides a foil for Fermina's graceful beauty by being clumsy and awkward - "While Gala Placidia bumped into people and became entangled in her baskets and had to run to keep up with [Fermina], she navigated the disorder of the street in her own time and space" (chapter 2, p99). Gala also becomes an agent in the romance between Fermina and Florentino as she is sent with a note to him.
